- Hits: What was the effect and outcome of Imam Husayn's revolution?
Imam Husayn's revolution was the most important revolution in human history from the aspect that intellectual, social and political foundations were built upon it, including the following: Victory of Islam Through his martyrdom, Imam Husayn (a.s.) bequeathed Islam a new lease of life, sacrificing his own blood for it. When Imam Zayn al-Abidin (a.s.) was asked by Talha bin Abdullah, who had won the battle he replied: "Whenever it is prayer time, you recite the azan (the call for prayer) and the iqamah (the shorter call for prayer); this tells you who the victor is."1 If the sacrifice of His Eminence, Husayn (a.s.) had not occurred, all his efforts, and the efforts of the Prophet (s) and all the well-being, blessings and mercy that he brought for mankind, would have been destroyed, as Bani Umayyah was bent on eradicating all the principles and guidelines brought by this religion, proclaiming instead, infidelity and apostasy, and a desire to rule with policies in which no signs of Qur'anic commands were visible. Defeat of the Umayyads The Imam's first clear victory was the defeat of the Umayyads, because it destroyed all the pillars and foundations erected by Mu'awiyyah to strengthen the regime of Abu Sufyan and his family. One writer stated: "Whatever Mu'awiyyah had built up for his son Yazid over the years was destroyed by Husayn (a.s.) in just a few days. People began to look at the caliph with disgrace and disregard."2 After the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (a.s.), the signs of Umayyad defeat were as follows: Separation from Religious Authority All the acts they committed against the Progeny of the Prophet (s) served to prove that the Umayyads had left the religion of Islam and the faith of Islam. For example, first of all, with the help of armed forces, they blocked the water supply. Then, after murdering His Eminence, they cut his holy body into pieces. After that they took the noble ladies of the Prophet's family as hostages and dragged them around the towns and cities in such a way that caused onlookers to shudder. Widespread Condemnation Another sign of Umayyad defeat was that their condemnation became widespread and those attending gatherings and assemblies openly criticized their policies and evil ways. Transfer of the Caliphate from the Umayyads The Imam's (a.s.) revolution plunged the Umayyad regime into defeat until the dark regime was finally destroyed by the establishment of Abbasid rule. Bringing out the True Status of the Ahlul-Bayt The tragedy of Karbala clearly showed that the Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.) were outstanding examples of spiritual and practical leadership of the Islamic community, and vanguards of truth and justice on earth. Flourishing Talent One of the successful outcomes of the Husaynite revolution was that it produced a flourishing of talent and skills, and created an outstanding genre of literature, one which is exquisite, outstanding and beautiful. Its main features are as follows: First: It extolled those values of social justice and human values for which the great Imam struggled. Second: It condemned oppression, fought falsehood and confronted arrogance and obstinacy. Third: It motivated society towards honor and higher ideals by following Imam Husayn (a.s.), a leader with high expectations, and the vanguard of human perfection. Fourth: It put forth the intellectual and religious perspective of the honorable Imam. Sermons of Exhortation and Guidance One of the most notable consequences of the revolution of the Chief of the Nobles was that it gave rise to platforms for propagating the message of Imam Husayn (a.s.), which to this day play an important role in imparting lessons of righteousness and piety and preaching the significance of sacrifice in the path of truth. Continuation of Revolution The tragedy of Karbala created a terrible wave of confusion and had a deep effect on the life of Muslims, stimulating them to undertake political action and form social groups.
