These eloquent words accurately demonstrate the level of humility that is required by children towards their parents. Imam al-Sadiq (as) says: "Do not stare at them save with compassion and gentleness, and do not raise your voice above their voices nor your hand above their hands, and do not advance before them." Then he begins explaining the meaning of the noble verse, "But speak to them a generous word" (17:23), saying: "If they strike you, then say to them: "May God forgive you."

With regard to the rights of parents, the Holy Quran says: "Lower the wing of humility to them out of mercy" (17:24).
